Chicken of the Sea mermaid
The Chicken of the Sea mermaid first appeared on the tuna label in the 1950s, and is now a well-known icon. The advertising jingle ("Ask any Mermaid You Happen to See ... What's the Best Tuna? Chicken of the Sea!") was developed in the 1960s.

The official explanation of the brand name is that fishermen used to refer to white albacore tuna as "chicken of the sea" due to its sweet white flesh which reminded them of chicken.

The original design for the Chicken of the Sea mermaid was based on Star Trek actress Grace Lee Whitney.

The Chicken of the Sea mermaid logo appears on all the Chicken of the Sea brand merchandise including cans, pouches, and advertising. There was even a special promotional plushie of the Chicken of the Sea mermaid.
